Influencer Marketing: How do I set up tracking for Instagram Story and Tag Mentions through Meta's Messenger API?
Table of Contents
With Sprout Social Influencer Marketing's Meta integration, you can connect your Instagram Business Accounts to track Stories and Posts where your brand is mentioned.
Connecting your Instagram Accounts
To track your Instagram Story and Tag Mentions, navigate to the Integrations Tab in the Organization Settings and click Instagram.
Click Manage Instagram Accounts and select the accounts you want to track Story and Tag mentions for. You can also connect the Facebook Pages connected to those Instagram Accounts at this stage.
If you connected Instagram Story Mentions before March 12, 2024, you'll need to go through the Add Instagram Account flow again to ensure your Stories continue working.
To ensure your Instagram Business Account DM settings allow for third-party app access, follow the steps below on your mobile device:
- Navigate to Settings and privacy for your Instagram Business Profile.
- Scroll down to Messages and story replies .
- Tap Message controls .
- Ensure that Allow access to messages under Connected Tools is toggled ON .
If you don't adjust these settings in Instagram Settings, your Story Mentions won't be tracked in Influencer Marketing.
Invite collaborators to connect their Instagram accounts
If you don't have access to your company's Instagram accounts, you can invite collaborators outside of your organization to connect the Instagram accounts to Influencer Marketing.
To invite a collaborate to connect their Instagram account:
- Click on your user icon and click Integrations > Instagram.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Manage Collaborators.
- Enter the collaborator’s email address and click Invite Collaborator.
- The collaborator will receive an email with the option to connect an account.
- Upon receiving the email invite, the collaborator will need to click Continue and enter their name and click Add Instagram Account button.
When the connection is successful, you’ll see collaborators on the list under Manage Collaborators:
Tracking Story and Tag Mentions in your campaigns
After connecting your Instagram Accounts, the Story and Tag Mentions automatically populate for all of your campaign creators so long as they fulfill both of the following criteria:
- The campaign’s brand profile references the Instagram Business Account you connected
- You’ve hired the creators who mention your brand in this campaign
Functionalities and limitations
Influencer Marketing lets you see when creators in your campaign mention your brand in their stories and posts. You’ll be able to see the Instagram Story for the first 24 hours from when it’s posted, after which it expires.
To comply with Meta's requirements, there are a few limitations that you need to be aware of:
- You can only see a creator’s Story for the first 24 hours from its creation. After 24 hours, Influencer Marketing shows a placeholder in place of the actual Story.
- The Story and Tag Mentions are available in campaigns and reports based on the profiles they mention. They're not available in creator search.
- You won't have access to any Stories that fail to properly mention an Instagram account that Influencer Marketing has appropriate permissions for. Influencer Marketing doesn’t pull Stories based on keywords.
- You only have access to Stories and Posts published by creators hired in your campaigns.
- You only have access to Stories and Posts published by creators with Instagram Creator or Business Account.
- You can't see historical Story Mentions that were created before your Instagram Account was connected.
Once you connect your Instagram Accounts, additional Story Mentions will be added to your existing campaigns as they’re not restricted by your campaign’s keyword settings.
